Public Information Officer
Compensation: $59,051.00 – $146,150.00 Salary
Job Description:
The New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD) is seeking a Chief Information Officer (CIO) to enhance public awareness and perception of the department through effective and ambitious communications strategies and campaigns. The candidate must be skilled in written and oral communications and approach the job with initiative and creative thinking.
Supervisory – This position will be responsible for day-to-day management of a small communications unit with duties that include: hiring vacant positions, establishing and closing evaluations, reviewing and approving leave requests, approving time, and guiding and training unit staff. This position will be responsible for working with the HR Manager to hire any vacant positions within the unit and to process any personnel actions or disciplinary actions for any staff within the unit. The CIO will be responsible for ensuring coverage in the communications unit when staff is out and approving all leave requests for staff for the communications unit.
Public Relations & Communications Management – The CIO will be responsible for leading all public relations campaigns, including writing and/or reviewing press releases issued by the department. The CIO will attend events with IAD staff, in particular with IAD leadership, to take notes and photos, learn and distill information and communicate it to the media and public. The CIO will be responsible for establishing a strong communications plan that highlights the agency’s work and mission, and also for developing a process and timelines for internal communications workflow.
The CIO will manage IAD social media accounts and ensure that agency initiatives are communicated on various platforms on a regular––at least weekly––basis. The CIO will be responsible for drafting talking points and public speeches delivered by department staff. The PIO will be the point of contact for all media inquiries, and will be expected to respond to reporters in a timely manner. The CIO will manage and update the department’s website. At times, the CIO may send correspondence and updates to tribal leadership.
Finally, this position will lead and oversee all press events and other department events highlighting the agency, including the State Tribal Leaders Summit and American Indian Day.
